about

Kristina van de Sandfoto: Nicola Schmid

Born in Mönchengladbach, Germany, I made first early experiences on stage with the rock string orchestra (Rockstreichorchester) and the youth symphony orchestra of my hometown music school. I studied cultural management in Hildesheim, with main subjects music and theatre. During the studies I was fortunate to have violin lessons with Marie-Luise Jauch and double/e- bass lessons with Bernd Jacobsen and Jürgen Attig. In 2005 I participated at the pop course in Hamburg, and got lessons with Stefan Pintev. Afterwards, I spent one more semester abroads as ERAMUS student ( jazz) at the college for music and theatre in Porto (ESMAE, Portugal) where I met wonderful musicians and friends for life. I digged deep into the vibrant jazz scene of this beautiful town and went back to Germany, where I began to prepare for the qualifying examination at HMT Hannover. I was lucky – after finishing studies in Hildesheim I had the chance to do even one more diploma – in jazz violin – with Hajo Hoffmann and Ulli Bartel.

Before and during the studies I spent a lot of time in spanish- and portuguese-speaking countries: six months in Ecuador and Peru and a total of nine months in Brazil. During that period I went with a scholarship from DAAD to Rio de Janeiro, worked at SESC Rio, coordinating a german-brazilian theatre project (Estranha Visão). There I met violinist Nicolas Krassik and learned more about Forró and Samba phrasing on the violin. Since then one of my focuses lies on Latin-American music and culture, in particular brazilian.

Since I was 13 years old, I played in several bands and got to know a lot of different musical styles, such as Punk, Swing, Forró, Salsa, Tango, Country, Minimal Music, Pop … Some of my heart projects you can visit on this site: Quartett PLUS 1, Tango Bastardo, Pinkspots, Sweet Syncopation, and bye bye brasil. Surely a good preparation for the engagements at musical theatre productions I had over the last years at Staatstheater Braunschweig, Deutsches Theater Göttingen and Staatstheater Hannover.

All over my studies I teached violin, also for the Streicherakademie Hannover. Since my kids are born and I see them growing up with music, my interest in creative forms of music education has grown likewise. Over the last years I developed with Quartett PLUS 1 educational concert formats for the Kölner Philharmonie, Konzerthaus Berlin and the music conservatory in Hildesheim.

In 2017, I moved with my family to Lisbon, where I met flutist Elena La Conte and bassist Walter Areia. – B-Mesmo was born! With this trio, I continue the research in the vast field of world music but also in the educational sector as we are creating concert formats for children. Our actual project, “O Canto da Baleia”, will be shown in Lisbon, Paris, Hamburg, Bremen, Hildesheim and Cologne in 2018/19.
